OUR HISTORY

It all started in 1977 in Windermere, the Lake District, with holiday property management and lettings agency Traditional Lakeland Cottages – the oldest holiday lettings agency in the region.

In 2000 current Chief Executive Officer Paul Liddell joined the holiday letting business.

Today, under the name of Lakelovers, the passion for premium self-catering holidays has driven an exciting story that continues to unfold.

2017 was an important year for Lakelovers in the Lake District.

9th July 2017 the Lake District received World Heritage Status, joining the likes of the Taj Mahal and the Great Barrier Reef.

Also 2017 Lakelovers celebrated 40 years of providing the best end-to-end holiday cottage management in the Lake District. And that year VisitEngland announced that Lakelovers now held the largest collection of VisitEngland gold award accredited self-catering cottages in the region. Subsequently, as a recognition of the Lakelovers commitment to quality delivered by a truly dedicated and expert team, Lakelovers Gold was launched on 4th December 2017, offering devoted sales personnel to this exclusive portfolio of 100 select holiday cottages.

Before the Ruby celebrations were over, on 11th December 2017 Lakelovers Chief Executive Paul Liddell successfully led a management buyout with investment from LDC, the private-equity arm of Lloyds Banking Group PLC.

Over the next two years, as part of an ambitious strategy to drive scale in the Lakelovers business, a string of acquisitions then followed, as Lakelovers and LDC sought to capitalise on the bourgeoning ‘staycations’ trend.

In the spring of 2018 Lakelovers expanded outside of the Lake District for the first time. On 20th April 2018, Lakelovers and LDC announced the acquisition of Character Cottages, a luxury holiday cottage agency in the Cotswolds. This was the first of a focused acquisition trail that led to another procurement 6 months later.

Returning to the Lake District, on 27th November 2018 Lakelovers acquired family-run cottage agency Heart of the Lakes, together offering guests over 900 self-catering cottages in the region.

A little over 1 month later, the Lakelovers Lake District holiday agency added over 100 luxury holiday lodges in the Lake District through its acquisition of Lake District Lodge Holidays Limited on 4th January 2019.

In 2018 The Pure Cottages Group was launched to bring these brands together under one umbrella.
